Historical Global Review of Acid-Volatile Sulfide Sediment Monitoring Data

چکیده

Acid-volatile sulfides (AVS) are strongly associated with the bioavailability of some divalent metals such as cadmium, copper, lead, nickel and zinc. However, global spatial variability AVS for aquatic systems is unknown. The specific goals this study were to: (1) summarize all available monitoring data from types freshwater saltwater waterbodies (streams/creeks, rivers, lakes/ponds/reservoirs estuarine/marine areas) (2) compare concentrations these various considering both soil type classification biomes. measurements reported 21 different countries. A total 17 waterbody podzols luvisols found in types. Nine biomes sampled temperate broadleaf mixed forest biome was Mean ranged 0.01 to 503 µmoles/g 140 90th centile 49.4 µmoles/g. ranking means low high showed lowest mean value streams/creeks (5.12 µmoles/g; range 0.1 39.8 µmoles/g) followed by (11.3 0.79 127 µmoles/g); areas (27.2 0.06 rivers (27.7 1.13 197 µmoles/g). provided compelling it that within each well locations often multiple orders magnitude differences concentration ranges. Therefore, a comprehensive temporal scale sampling concert analysis critical avoid possible errors when evaluating potential ecological risk sediment.

Acid-volatile sulfide (AVS) — A comment

The review by Rickard and Morse (this volume) adequately summarizes our current understanding with respect to acid-volatile sulfides (AVS). At the same time, this review addresses some of the misunderstandings with regard to measurements and dynamics of this important sedimentary sulfur pool. In this invited commentary, we identify some aspects that deserve more attention in our point of view, ...

Oxidation chemistry of acid-volatile sulfide during analysis.

The susceptibility of some components of sediment acid-volatile sulfide (AVS) to chemical oxidation is a critical factor impacting accurate measurement of AVS in sediment samples. This well-documented susceptibility to oxidation led to the requirement for oxygen-free conditions in the analytical method developed for AVS. In light of this acute potential to oxidize, the serendipitous finding tha...

Assessment of sediment quality based on acid-volatile sulfide and simultaneously extracted metals in heavily industrialized area of Asaluyeh, Persian Gulf: concentrations, spatial distributions, and sediment bioavailability/toxicity.

Sediment samples from the coastal area of Asaluyeh harbor were collected during autumn and spring 2015. The acid-volatile sulfide (AVS) and simultaneously extracted metals (SEMs) were measured to assess the sediment quality and potential ecological risks. The average concentrations (and relative standard deviation (RSD)) of AVS in the industrial sediments were 12.32 μmol/g (36.91) and 6.34 μmol...

Measurements of acid volatile sulfide and simultaneously extracted metals are irreproducible among laboratories.

Partitioning with solid phases is a principal control on availability and associated toxicity of metals to aquatic biota. In anoxic sediments, environmentally active fractions of sulfide and associated metals are defined operationally as acid-volatile sulfide (AVS) and simultaneously extracted metals (SEM). Ratios of these chemical parameters are often used in establishing equilibrium partition...
